Student

Edward Herman Student Regent Arizona

Ultimately appointed by the Governor

8 non-student regents

2 student regents (2 – 2 year terms that are staggered)

Confirmed by the Senate

Student regent rotates between the universities (there are three)

NAU then U of A and the ASU

First year you are non-voting…. Then in the second year you get to vote

Extensive time commitment- get out of it what you put into it –to do it right you have to put a lot of time into it (25 hours a week)

Long fight in the state legislature in the mid 70’s – on year term and it was non-voting and then there was another movement to give that student a vote –

2 year terms and the voting

Check out Arizona Student Association

To get this enacted we should go to the legislature

Faculty can be… they can be appointed to the board (one or more of the Regents has served on the faculty at least once in their life) … Student would never be appointed because of the way the demographics are… students are the customers and their voice needs to be heard… hard to get that perspective

Two year term is perfect to combat the inexperience issue …. Student Regent from Arizona writes bills as well as chairs a committee (Task force on textbook costs committee) serves on the capital, IT, and audit committee … they offer perspective .. they ask why is that and student regent can answer

“I think its great they were able to secure 2 student Regents. Does anyone know how they were able to go about this?”

Comment by ellovett - SGA Administrators

“This is great and should be a similar template for the state of Georgia as far as getting a student on the Board of Regents.”
